Union Cab offers new online ordering service

Union Cab offers new online ordering service

Union Cab announced earlier this month that their taxis can now be ordered online.

The real-time online ordering service can be found at http://www.unioncab.com/order.

The new service is available on smart phones and does not require the user to download an application, said a press release.  Users can view a route and fare estimate on the new website.  A taxi confirmation is sent through e-mail and a credit or debit card is needed to place the order.

"Madison ranks near the top as a tech city,” said Union Cab Information Technology Manager Brian Hill. "Being able to order a cab through the web or phone should be an option."

Union Cab of Madison is a 220 member worker cooperative providing taxi, wheelchair accessible taxi, and courier service to the greater Madison metropolitan area.

City to test lane reduction plan on John Nolen Drive

City to test lane reduction plan on John Nolen Drive

The Madison Traffic Engineering Department will eliminate a third, lightly-used through lane from Broom Street to North Shore Drive temporarily.

By eliminating the late, officials believe they can improve the pedestrian and bike crossing at the John Nolen Drive and North Shore Drive intersection as well as increasing the safety for northbound drivers making left turns from John Nolen Drive to westbound North Shore Drive.

The test would maintain the two heavily used through lanes. It is scheduled to run through May 28.

If the test proves that the lane reduction is desirable, the traffic control devices may be left in place until permanent changes are made in the field.

There is no significant traffic delay expected during the test, however, motorists are reminded to drive cautiously through the test zone, officials said.

New Business, ScooterCabs, Helps Eliminate Drunk Driving

New Business, ScooterCabs, Helps Eliminate Drunk Driving

ScooterCabs, a local business created by three University of Wisconsin-Madison grads, aims to provide an affordable alternative to taking a taxi home or driving under the influence.

The service was created as an extra option for patrons that drive out to a bar or restaurant and have a few too many drinks.  The concept is similar to a taxi, except for one fundamental difference; the taxi is now the patron’s own vehicle.  There is no longer a need for patrons to abandon their vehicle at the bar or restaurant to make it home safely.

"With Wisconsin’s high rates of drunk driving, Madison seemed to have a need for this type of service," said owner Justin Sisley, "but even for the majority of people who would make the responsible decision to call a cab, our service provides a much more convenient option for them.  No more waiting around for a friend or cab to take you back to your car in the morning."
