Mayor Dave Blogs About New Hybrid Buses

On Monday, we celebrated the addition of 14 more hybrid buses to our city fleet. That makes 20 total or about 10 percent of the 205 buses Metro runs.

The buses were purchased with 100 percent federal dollars from the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (the stimulus bill passed last year). Because of the cost premium on hybrids we would never have been able to buy that many of them without ARRA.

56 Tickets Issues Following Seat Belt Enforcement In Monona

Monona Police and the town of Madison combined to issue 63 citations including 56 tickets for failure to fasten seat belts, on Monday morning.

The two departments shared a $10,000 Seat Belt Enforcement Grant from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation Bureau of Traffic Safety.  The money covered overtime for nine officers.

The goal of the enforcement from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. was to increase voluntary compliance with traffic safety laws such as buckling up.  Officers said they are tired of responding to incidents where lives lost could have been saved.

The officers said they issued seven other citations. Those violations included running a red light, operating after revocation and failing to register a vehicle.

The Story Behind The Billboards

First you might have saw it on the the digital billboard along the Beltline Highway in the town of Madison, but now you may have noticed on Highway 51 in Janesville, a picture of two shrimp dipped in what appears to be oil.

Adams Outdoor Advertising created an ongoing public service message that brings attention to the ongoing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

If you thought the billboard seemed to be looking at you, that, too, was intended.  Officials said the single black brushstroke, formed a sad face.

The Green Drive Expo started as Hybridfest, and for the past five years has brought together green drivers from across the nation.

Folks have driven as far away as New York and California.
