Lifeguards on Duty at Madison Beaches June 11th

If you are looking to beat the summery heat by taking a dip in the lake, you are in luck! Starting this Saturday, June 11th, lifeguards will be on duty at Madison beaches. Here's the hours for the closest beaches in the neighborhood:

  • Bernie's Beach is currently closed, and will be open daily from 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm
  • Esther Beach is currently closed, and will have daily hours from 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm
  • Olin Beach is currently open, and will have daily hours from 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm

Indy Car, Driver To Make Stop At Zimbrick Honda

Justin Wilson, IZOD Indy Car Series Driver, will be at Zimbrick Honda off the Beltline on Thursday, June 16 from 3 to 5 p.m. The event is open to the public.

Wilson is scheduled to be a part of the IZOD IndyCar Series Milwaukee 225 race at the Milwaukee Mile on Sunday, June 19.

For the past 16 years, Wilson has displayed his passion and talent for racing, winning titles in karting, formula cars and eventually progressing to Formula One.

Wilson will be on site at Zimbrick Honda at 1601 W. Beltline Highway to greet fans and sign autographs.

LaFollette Boys, Sun Prairie Girls Win Track Regionals

The march toward the state track meet in La Crosse next month continues, with local teams trying to send their teams to state.

The LaFollette High School boys track team and Sun Prairie High School girls track team made it out of Monday's regional in Waunakee with victories. LaFollette had success in a lot of events, including the 3200 meter relay, where the Lancers get the win over West, Memorial and Monona Grove.

Sun Prairie might have won the girls meet, but individuals from other teams also did well. LaFollette senior Maranda Stoeberl won the regional in the high jump with a mark of 5 feet, 2 inches.

Sectional meets are on Thursday, followed by the state track meet June 3 and June 4 at Veterans Memorial Stadium at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Verona Wins Big Eight Girls Softball Title

A three-way battle for the Big Eight girls softball title was finally sorted out Tuesday after Verona High School went on the road to Madison LaFollette High School in a key season-ending battle.

Verona couldn't get to LaFollette freshman pitcher Nicole Newman until the top of the fifth inning.

However, Jillian Bauer got a base hit to score Kelly Gavigan, which game Verona a 3-1 lead.

Verona got another run late, and Jillian Bauer made the final out to give Verona a 4-1 victory over LaFollette, and the Big Eight girls softball title outright.

Memorial Beats West In Girls Soccer

Madison Memorial and Madison West have had a long ongoing rivalry in girls soccer, but Memorial will have bragging rights for a while after Thursday's game at Mansfield Stadium.

The Spartans scored early and often Thursday night. Hannah Rather got the first score at 5:10 of the first half on a rebound, and put it past the goalie for a 1-0 lead.

That was followed up by Ingrid Greene, who put in a header in the 20th minute to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead. Mary Erikson also got in the act, scoring in the 30th minute to give the Spartans a 4-0 lead at the half.

Memorial won the game going away, 5-1 over the Regents.

Madison Sports Hall Of Fame To Honor Area Athletes

The Madison Sports Hall of Fame Club will honor some of the areas top athletes and teams from the past year at its annual Hall of Fame Induction Banquet. The banquet is set for Wednesday evening, June 1, at Monona Terrace.

Each year, the Hall of Fame Club not only inducts sports figures into its Hall of Fame, but honors outstanding performances from the past year.  

The Zimbrick Honda Madison Sportsman of the Year Award will be given to Madison East basketball player Nimrod Hilliard IV. He was named Mr. Basketball by the state’s coaches, was a first team All-State, All-Area and All-City selection. Hilliard will continue his basketball career at South Dakota next year.

Mary's School of Dance will celebrating its 35th anniversary with a very special recital on Friday night.

The recital will be Friday, May 13 at 7 p.m. at the Oregon High School Performing Arts Center.
