Maintenance To Begin On Capitol City State Trail

 

Starting on Thursday, July 21, Dane County will begin annual maintenance on the Verona Road to Knob Hill segment of the Capital City State Trail. 

Maintenance will include the repair and sealing of surface cracks in the trail. 

Work may take up to several days to complete. 

Trail patrons may want to use alternative routes while maintenance activities are taking place.

The Esther and Spring Harbor beaches are closed for swimming due to blue-green algae. The beaches will reopen when their levels decline, officials said.

Goodman’s Jewelers To Sponsor First 500 Kids Through Goodman Pool Gates On July 1

Goodman’s Jewelers, 220 State Street, will be sponsoring the Goodman Day by providing free admission to the first 500 kids to come to the pool on Friday, July 1. The gates open for recreation swim time open at 12:30 p.m.

Goodman Day is in honor of Irwin and Bob Goodman who were long-time supporters of many organizations in Madison, including Madison Parks. Their donation of $2.8 million for the construction of the pool was needed impetus to get a pool built in Madison. 

Even after the pool was built, they continued to support it by establishing a scholarship fund. Hundreds of children, regardless of their income level, have learned how to swim at Madison Parks Goodman Pool.

Madison To Host U.S. Trampoline And Tumbling Association National Championships

The United States Trampoline and Tumbling Association will roll into Madison for the competition from June 17-23 at the Alliant Energy campus.

The event will bring more than 5,000 athletes and fans to the Greater Madison area with boys and girls age three and older competing for national championship titles in three events: tumbling, trampoline and double-mini trampoline.

The Madison Area Sports Commission estimates that the event will generate about $1 million in direct spending to the area’s economy.

"We are thrilled that U.S. Trampoline and Tumbling Association has selected Madison again for the 2012 National Championships; the newest generation of tumblers will get to experience what we do on a daily basis -- a unique, inviting city with a wide array of summer activities to take advantage of," said Jamie Patrick, Director of Sports Sales and Program Development for the MASC.

Enrollment Tops 50 For New Madison Swim Team

More than 50 kids will finish their first week of practice for the Goodman Pool Waves, Madison’s newest team in the all-city swim league. 

"The creation of a competitive swim team has long been a dream of ours," said Rich Glover, of the Shelley Glover Sports Education Foundation

The team is a result of a community partnership between SGSEF, Madison Parks and the Irwin A. and Robert D. Goodman Foundation.

The team, already up to 56 members, represents the three organizations’ commitment to strengthen swim opportunities for children in Madison. 

Of the 56 team members, 20 are receiving scholarships as part of the program.
