Dane County Humane Society Presents 3rd Annual Ride For Pets

The Dane County Humane Society is having its 3rd Annual DCHS Motorcycle Ride for Pets on Saturday, Aug. 13, where people can rev up their motorcycles to raise money for homeless animals.

Schedule:

* 10am-11am – Check In/Register at Engelhart Center (1589 Greenway Cross, Madison)

* 11am-3pm – Ride the Route! (Black Earth, Blue Mounds, Mount Horeb and Oregon areas - The suggested route is 112 miles, but you can ride as far as you like)

* 3pm – 6pm – Party at Quaker Steak & Lube (2259 Deming Way, Middleton)

Registration is only $35 (or $60 for two riders on one bike) and includes: a poker hand, commemorative t-shirt, meal, live music and it provides a dog three days of food and shelter at DCHS. 

Please don't bring your own pets.

City Drop Off Site To Relocate Temporarily Due To Construction

The city of Madison Streets Division's drop off site at 1501 W. Badger Rd. will be closed starting Thursday,.July 28.

The site will be moved temporarily to the city's transfer station at 121 E. Olin Ave, officials said.

The offices at Badger Road will remain open during construction.

Green Drive Expo Rolls Into Madison

The Dane County Fair will provide the background from the annual Green Drive Expo this weekend.

“When we first started this thing, we called it Hybridfest, but it’s always been more than that," said Eric Powers, founder of Green Drive Expo in a news release. "There are so many options for green ways to travel from point A to point B, some of which don’t even include cars, such as biking or public transit."

With hybrids, plug-in hybrids, electric cars, compressed natural gas vehicles and bio-diesel cars on hand, attendees will learn all about green. The event caters to green drivers and those interested in green transportation in general.

No Refuse, Recycling Collection Monday

There will be no refuse or recycling collection in the city of Madison on Monday, July 4, due to the Independence Day holiday.

Residents who have their refuse and recycling collected on Monday will have their material collected on Tuesday, July 5. Residents in Tuesday's refuse collection district will also have their material collected on July 5.

"Because of the double collection on Monday, July 5 it is important that residents have their material out by 7 a.m. to insure collection," Madison Recycling Coordinator George Dreckmann said in a news release.

Because of the holiday, the Streets Division's large item service may run a day late the week of July 4th.

DCHS Celebrates All-American Dog Week With Focus On Pit Bulls

From Friday, July 1 through Sunday, July 10, the Dane County Humane Society will celebrating "All-American Dog Week" with a special Pit Bull Terrier adoption offer. 

Adopters of a Pit Bull Terrier or a Pit Bull Terrier mix can receive a full adoption rebate upon completion of DCHS’s Positively Pitties six-week training session. 

Positively Pitties is a unique and extremely educational Pit Bull Terrier Education Program. 

The program strives to make adopters and their canine companion glowing ambassadors of the breed.

Plans Move Forward To Tear Down South Side Gas Station

A demoliton permit application will be reviewed by the city of Madison Plan Commission on July 13. 

The permit would allow the demolition of a one story, masonry and steel gas station at 1129 S. Park St. It would be replaced with a new convenience store.

The existing structure is under 600 square feet, according to documents filed with the city. The documents said that the new building would be 2,200 square feet.

Yard Waste Sites Open On Saturday

The weather is warming up and thousands of Madison residents are heading out to do yard work. With that yard works comes yard debris leaves, plant stalks and weeds.

The city of Madison yard waste drop off sites will open for the season this Saturday, March 26.

"Our yard waste drop off sites will open summer hours on Saturday, March 26," Madison recycling coordinator George Dreckmann said. 

Madison's yard waste drop off sites are located at 1501 W. Badger Rd., 4602 Sycamore Av, and 402 South Point Rd. Starting the 26th the sites will be open seven days a week from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. The sites will also be open on Tuesday and Thursday evenings until 8 p.m.

"Right now, our sties at 1501 West Badger Road and 4602 Sycamore Avenue are open winter hours, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 3 p.m.," Dreckmann said. "The South Point Rd. site is closed until the 26."
