Green initiative begins 2012-2013 season

The Green Tuesdays and Thursdays initiative will once again take place throughout Dane County.

The 2012-2013 season begins in September with two food-related documentaries, said a press release.

Dive is about people salvaging thousands of dollars’ worth of edible food from dumpsters, showing food waste in America.

PlanEat is about three men who search for a diet that is good for human health, the environment, and the future of the planet.

Discussion will follow the films.

The events, which began in 2008, focus on the conservation of natural resources. Nearly 2,200 attendees have discussed climate change, sustainable gardening, reducing energy use, composting, how to winterize a home, and the local Focus on Energy program, said a press release.

Madison dogs paddle to support police K-9s

A local non-profit organization is hosting a fundraiser for Madison Police Department’s K-9 Unit.

Capital K9s helps to fund the unit through their annual Dog Paddle event. Now in its sixth year, the event will be held at Goodman Pool, located at 325 W. Olin Ave.

At the Dog Paddle, dogs can swim, play and compete for prizes. Past events have had 1,000 dogs in attendance.

Capital K9s recently helped the Madison Police Department purchase two new dogs which each cost $50,000, according to the non-profit.

The event will be Sept. 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission costs $12 for dogs and dog owners enter for free.

Madison Labor Temple hosts Labor Day celebration

This Labor Day, the South Central Federation of Labor will host its annual LaborFest celebration.

The event features music and dancing starting at 12:30 p.m. LaborFest regulars The Westside Andy / Mel Ford Band will perform, followed by Paul Cebar Tomorrow Sound at 3 p.m.

Attractions for children include a bouncy house, balloons and face painting, as well as a piñata and performances by Madison magician Scott the Great.

Food, beer, and soft drinks will also be served. Menu items include Italian sausage, corn on the cob, Louisiana-style rice and beans, hot dogs and chips.

At 2:15 p.m. the Solidarity Roll Call will take place.

Admission is free but attendees are urged to bring non-food household items, such as toothpaste, shampoo, paper products or detergent, for distribution at local food pantries.

The event takes place Monday, Sept. 3 from 12:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Madison Labor Temple, located at 1602 South Park St.

Backpacks and school supplies provided to Dane County children

The first day of school will be a little brighter for some Madison families.

The annual Ready, Set, Go: Back to School event will take place on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will be hosted by The Boys & Girls Club of Dane County, the Madison Metropolitan School District, Latino Chamber of Commerce, and the Latino Support Network. It will take place at both Boys & Girls Club sites- Taft Street and the Allied Family Center, and Leopold Elementary School.

MMSD Superintendent Jane Belmore and Boys & Girls Club CEO, Michael Johnson will meet at the Allied Drive Boys & Girls Club to deliver backpacks to neighborhood families, said a press release.

“Thanks to Walgreens, Michaels, Shopko, Staples, the Fitchburg Police Department and many other community partners we are able to get our local kids off to school with a great start,” said Michael Johnson, CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County.

Volunteers needed for American Red Cross remembrance event

The American Red Cross Western Chapter of Madison is calling for volunteers to help with its annual Day of Service Remembrance Event.

The event will take place on Sept. 9 from 12 to 4 p.m. Volunteers should meet at the Badger Chapter headquarters at 4860 Sheboygan Ave.

Volunteers will help American Red Cross volunteers to canvass neighborhoods and inform residents about fire safety and precautions, said a press release. A light lunch will be provided.

The American Red Cross is a charitable organization that provides support to victims of disasters, supplies nearly half of the nation’s blood, provides humanitarian aid, and more.

Hundreds walk for diabetes

Over 300 participants and volunteers will join to walk for charity this weekend.

The American Diabetes Association Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes will take place on Sunday, Aug. 26. The walk will raise funds to support the mission and research of the American Diabetes Association.

Participants will walk 3.2 miles through the Olin Park neighborhood. Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m., followed by an opening ceremony at 9:45 a.m. The walk begins at 10 a.m.

Triathlete Jay Hewitt, the first athlete with diabetes to qualify for the U.S. National Triathlon team, will speak during the opening ceremonies.

The Step Out walk is sponsored nationally by Novo Norodisk and locally by Walgreens, Ho-Chunk Gaming Madison, Dean St. Mary’s, UW Health, Meriter and Physicians Plus, Dr. Comfort, and WISC-TV.

Madison Mini Marathon & 5K will cause street closures

The fourth annual Madison Mini Marathon & 5K presented by Meriter and Physicians Plus is set for Saturday, Aug. 18, and some roads will be closed for the event.

The half marathon and 5K start at 7 a.m. and the Kids' Run starts at approximately 10 a.m. at the University of Wisconsin Memorial Union at 800 Langdon St.

The scenic course includes all of Madison's Landmarks: Capitol Square, the Dane County Farmer's Market, State Street, Camp Randall Stadium, Kohl Center, the Arboretum, Picnic Point and the University of Wisconsin Campus.
