Southside teams get new uniforms for homecoming

 

The Southside Raiders football and cheerleading teams will be sporting new uniforms at their homecoming this weekend.

The Boys & Girls Club of Dane County and representatives from the Madison Shamrock Shuffle will unveil the uniforms at the event Saturday.  The homecoming event will begin at 10 a.m. at Penn Park.

“We are really excited that we were able to provide this opportunity for our local kids,” said Michael Johnson, CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County. “I am so happy to see them in new uniforms representing our community. We are so thankful to Shamrock Shuffle,” says Johnson.

The Shamrock Shuffle named the Boys & Girls Club as the sole beneficiary of their race.  Proceeds will support the Club’s healthy living and wellness initiatives, said a press release.  The Raiders have needed uniforms for years.

Madison child featured in National Down Syndrome Society video

A Madison child will be featured in the National Down Syndrome Society annual Times Square video presentation this weekend.

A photo of Abigail Marie Kaiser singing at the Madison Blues Fest in June will appear in the video Saturday.  In the photo, she is joined on stage by Oscar Wilson of the Cash Box Kings. Her picture was chosen from over 1,000 entries worldwide.  Two hundred pictures will appear in the video.

"We are so proud to represent our community at this exciting event," said Abigail’s mother Danielle. "The selected photo represents diversity and inclusion in many ways. We are truly more alike than different."

Madison schools seek community help in superintendent search

 

The Madison Metropolitan School District's Board of Education is seeking community input in their search for a new superintendent.

Community input sessions will be held on Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. at East High School.  Another community input session will be held on Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. at Memorial High School.

“Selecting a new superintendent is one of our most important tasks as a Board, and to be successful, we need to work together with our community,” School Board President James Howard said. “Input and ideas from our staff, families and community partners will be crucial. We hope the community will join us in this process.”

The School Board will use the input to develop a profile of what the community desires in the next school district leader.  The sessions will be facilitated by the Board's search consultant, Ray & Associates.

Expo aims to strengthen local food economy

 

The second annual Wisconsin Local Food Expo will take place Tuesday to strengthen the local food economy.

The Sept. 18 event will connect farmers and food operations to large-scale buyers, said Dane County Executive Joe Parisi.    

“Our annual local food expo is yet another way Dane County is working to strengthen our local foods economy,” said Parisi.  “The expo shows our local buyers that you don’t need to go far to get the best products around, and support our local farm families in the process.”

The expo will include local meat and cheese producers, dessert and baked goods producers, specialty and gourmet item manufacturers and more, said a press release.  Sellers and buyers will come together from restaurants, grocery stores and institutions such as hospitals and schools.

Last year’s inaugural expo attracted buys and sellers from 23 counties in Wisconsin.

Open house exhibits living laboratory

 

Public tours will be offered to display the first phase of the Resilience Research Center, a living laboratory.

The tours will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 501 E. Badger Rd.

The open house will feature guided tours of the building, said a press release.  Highlights of the tour include a see-through water tank beneath the stairs, an edible four-acre landscape, a solar energy system on the roof, barn doors made of trees on abandoned property and Madison’s first commercial incubator kitchen, the press release said.

Badger Rock Middle School, a charter school, is located on the second floor of the building. Students will show visitors their classrooms at the open house as well.

Career fair highlights criminal justice opportunities

The Dane County Sheriff's Office will sponsor their fourth annual Criminal Justice Career Fair Thursday.

The event will take place on Sept. 13 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Alliant Energy Center.

Recruiters from local law enforcement agencies and representatives from area colleges will be at the event said a press release.  The Exhibition Hall will feature over 20 booths with displays.

The Dane County Sherriff's office will also feature demonstrations throughout the event, including the K9 unit, the bomb squad and the crime scene unit.  Attendees will see vehicles and equipment on display including Traffic Team vehicles, Marine and Trail boats and information from the Sheriff's Office Jail Diversion Program, said a press release.

The Criminal Justice Career Fair features career opportunities for everyone.  Civilian and sworn opportunities are available.

The event is free and open to the public.

Job fair attracts scores of companies

A free, public job fair will take place Wednesday at the Alliant Energy Center.

The Wisconsin Job Service and Dane County Human Services will host the Community Job Fair.  More than 75 industry leaders will be on-site to discuss career opportunities in health care, manufacturing, agriculture, business services, finance, biotechnology, utilities and construction and more, said a press release.

The event will take place in the exhibition hall at 1919 Alliant Energy Center Way.  It will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Free parking is available.
